Police in Redditch are set to benefit from new technology, which could help them identify tax and performance car insurance evaders.
Officers in the borough are to receive a dedicated vehicle fitted with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology as part of a £40,000 spend on such systems across the north Worcestershire area, the Redditch Advertiser reports.
"This system has given us another dimension to be able to tackle the travelling criminality who rely on vehicles to commit crime," said Sergeant Mark Layton of the north Worcestershire road policing unit.
According to the publication, the technology helps police to identify a car being used for criminal activity in just minutes, but the sergeant added that drivers will come up with a number of excuses to get out of situations involving police.
Meanwhile, the Home Office has said that it set aside £32.5 million for the police service to invest in such technology for their individual forces between 2005 and 2007.
