Motorists could find themselves liable for more than a high performance car insurance claim should their vehicle be stolen while thawing out.
The Journal is warning that drivers risk falling victim to crime if they leave their vehicles defrosting on the drive while unattended.
It states that in Newcastle, such incidents have fallen by 15 per cent over the course of 2007, but police are concerned that cold winter mornings could induce some motorists - potentially including performance car insurance holders - to take risks.
"At this time of year with cold, dark mornings people are preoccupied when de-icing and heating up their cars," stated Inspector Don Wade.
"We have seen a few thefts recently where the keys have been left in the ignition and thieves have taken advantage," he added.
Website SaferMotoring.co.uk suggests that the safest way to thaw out a vehicle is to stay inside it while the frost melts.
