People travelling on motorways, including performance car insurance customers, have been offered some tips on how to stay safe in the event of a breakdown.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists has warned that with up to 20 people being killed on the hard shoulder each year, motorists should stick to these guidelines in order to avoid injury or death.
Primarily, cars should be stopped with hazard lights on, where other cars can clearly see the vehicle.
Next, drivers and passengers should move away from the vehicle and behind the crash barrier if possible.
Finally, anyone travelling alone and feeling threatened should temporarily wait for breakdown services in the passenger seat, before leaving the vehicle again when it is safe to do so, the organisation states.
According to Safer Motoring, the majority of accidents on the hard shoulder happen because other motorists are unaware the car in front of them has stopped.
