Motorists with performance car insurance policies face prison if they are caught fraudulently taking part in practical driving tests.
According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), all reported cases of the crime are followed up by criminal justice bodies as well as the police.
It could be that those found guilty have trouble picking up car insurance in the future if cover companies consider them a road risk.
DSA head of fraud and integrity Andrew Rice stated that the issue is important to the body.
He said: "Tackling impersonations is a key priority for the agency as offenders presents a significant danger to road safety."
Meanwhile, DSA statistics reported by the Telegraph show that some 168 cases of fraudulent driving test applicants took place in Britain in 2007.
