In the future, motorists with performance car insurance may not be able to travel quicker than any other drivers on the road, it has been suggested.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) reported the government is currently considering proposals to introduce Intelligent Speed Adaption (ISA).
It explained this technology relies on global satellite positioning and digital maps to pinpoint a car's location and identify the speed limit in that area.
Using that information, ISA is then able to control the maximum speed a vehicle can achieve either automatically or at the driver's discretion.
IAM claimed if the system were adopted road deaths and injuries could fall by as much as 29 per cent.
Director of research and policy Neil Grieg stated: "ISA may be able to ensure that all cars observe speed limits, provided that critical safety conditions are met and tested."
Meanwhile, IAM recently warned motorists keen to avoid an insurance claim to be extra cautious in bad weather.
