Drivers of vehicles using their mobile phones are taking little notice of the law, despite lots of publicity on the danger this poses, according to an industry body.
Although sports car insurance policyholders may already be aware of legislation governing the use of handsets at the wheel, people of all types are ignoring the risks, said Institute of Advanced Motorists director Neil Greig.
They need to be better educated about why racing around while on a phone can potentially wreck lives, he added.
"The majority of road users deserve to be protected from an irresponsible and selfish minority and enforcement is, in our view, the key weapon against them."
Earlier this week, the organisation gave advice to people worried about what to do if their accelerator stuck.
The concerns follow a safety recall by Toyota, which announced that thousands of its models could be at risk from a serious fault.
