NFU Mutual has reminded drivers that when driving outside the UK, policies may not provide as much cover as back home.
Spokesperson Laura Wood said: "It is important that you check your car insurance when you travel overseas as there is often a limit on the number of days that you are covered for."
"It is important that you also check whether you are covered in the event of an accident or theft," she added.
Furthermore, the company said drivers should ensure they have Europe-wide breakdown cover before driving to the continent and to check their cars, vans and motorcycles for road potential problems.
Tyres, windscreens, lights and fluid levels should be inspected, the insurer said.
Last week the Retail Motor Industry Federation said drivers who rarely travel long distance should prepare their cars for holiday driving.
From performance, prestige and modified cars to classic and imported vehicles, vans, motorcycles and scooters, Performance Direct provides value for money insurance cover, often when other companies can't help.
