Rental and leasing company SHB 4x4 has said that while residual values for four-wheel drives may have weakened, owners can take steps to ensure they do not end up out of pocket.
Sellers should make sure the vehicles are clean, in good condition and have a full service history when they come to sell them, said the company director Paul Street.
"Just because it's a 4x4 doesn't mean buyers will accept less than good condition for it," he said.
Vehicles should also be ply or load-lined to reduce load area damage, Mr Street added.
Furthermore, he said sellers should look to a number of sales channels such as retail, trade and internet to expand the market
The popularity of 4x4s has declined due to the government's efforts to make high-emission vehicles less attractive and higher fuel prices, Mr Street said.
