Supersport motorcycle insurance customers may be among the riders being appealed to by one organisation to take care when travelling at speed.
According to the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, research has recently highlighted the dangers faced by riders of high performance bikes when traveling especially fast.
The institute's senior vice president for research Anne McCartt stated that bikers are likely to invest in the high performance vehicles because they want to travel fast, and while the bikes can be nimble and quick, there are also risks.
A similar plea was recently made by motor charity Road Peace, which called for bikes to be modified so they could not travel as fast, something that may reduce the chance of some riders having to claim on their motor bike insurance.
In a statement, the institute claimed that limiting how fast a bike can go is unlikely to help save lives.
"The choice to exceed the posted speed limit remains with the rider," it added.
