Implementing more severe penalties for uninsured drivers is one of the most popular policies motorists would make to improve driving conditions if they had the power to do so, it has been revealed.
The American Express Motor Insurance survey questioned 10,000 consumers on their preferences, and the danger uninsured motorists posed to car and bike insurance premiums was beaten only by a desire to improve public transport and boost the number of police patrols.
The actions of such drivers typically add an extra £25 or £30 to each annual premium.
"The uninsured driver poses a risk to every insured driver – not only is there the extra premium cost, but there is the risk of being involved in an accident with them," said American Express Motor Insurance marketing manager Joanne Field.
"Those with fully comprehensive insurance should be covered for repairs to the car. However, no claims discount could be lost and other costs like medical and legal bills may not be covered," Ms Field added.
A recent crackdown on uninsured motorists in Scotland saw over 120 vehicles seized in just two months.
