Antihistamine use 'worse than drink'

Car and motorcycle insurance customers who suffer from hayfever could run a greater risk of an accident than those who drive while under the influence of alcohol, a new study has suggested.

The University of Iowa research used a driving simulator to put volunteers to the test, challenging them to follow a car at variable speeds.

And hayfever sufferers under the influence of antihistamine treatments were less able to maintain control of their vehicle than drink drivers, Motorcycle News has reported.

The drowsy sensation produced by the tablets was blamed for the differences, though the drink drivers themselves were not over the legal limit in the US.

The results come as senior police officers urged drink driving levels and speed limits to be standardised across Europe.

"It would certainly help drivers to know that traffic regulations applied all over Europe are the same, it is the first condition they must comply with," advised European Traffic Police Network head Eddy Greif, according to the Guardian.
