New safety statistics 'may reassure motorcycle insurance customers'

Motorcycle insurance customers may be interested to hear that the RMI Motorcycle Rider Training Association (MRTA) believes efforts to improve the safety of riders on UK roads are beginning to make a difference.

This comes after figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) showed the overall motorcycle casualty rate fell by six per cent in 2007 compared to 2006.

In 1998 the casualty rate per 100 million vehicle kilometres was 621.

This number had fallen to 420 by 2007 – a decrease of 32 per cent.

Commenting on the government statistics, MRTA chairman Kevin Bryan said: "These latest figures are a sign that even with increased motorcycle traffic, up eight per cent over the previous year, motorcycling is gradually becoming safer."

He stated the DfT's report demonstrated safety work being carried out by the training industry was having an impact.

In related news, the Driving Standards Agency recently announced the introduction of the new practical motorcycle test was to be delayed by six months.
