Motorcyclists urged to check tyres
13 Aug 2008
TyreSafe has encouraged bikers to "Act" on tyre safety in three steps before going on trips over this month's bank holiday weekend.
Firstly, the air pressure should be checked against the manufacturer's recommendations, with allowances made for the weight of passengers and heavy loads.
The condition of the tyres and wheels is next on the list, with motorcyclists urged to have them balanced if uneven tyre wear is noticed. Stones and foreign objects should be removed and valve caps should be fitted to every wheel.
Finally, tread depth is highlighted by the group, which said tyres should be replaced before they reach the legal limit.
TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis said: "This bank holiday weekend may be the last time this year that they will venture out on their bike. It is critical that riders follow the principles of Act to ensure a safe weekend's riding."
In related news, the Scotsman has reported sales of motorbikes increased by 22 per cent last month.
