Brits get on their motorbikes

The number of people taking out motorcycle insurance could be set to soar following a jump in sales of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) during July.

Latest statistics from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) shows an increase of 22 per cent in sales of motorbikes, mopeds and scooters last month.

At the same time, the UK car market saw a drop in the same month, suggesting motorists may be switching to motorbikes.

Craig Carey-Clinch from the MCI said: "There are signs that people are switching to two wheels in order to make daily travel and commuting easier and cheaper."

Practical commuter-type bikes are believed to be very popular, with scooter and moped sales up nearly 27 per cent and 34.5 per cent respectively last month.

Mr Carey-Clinch said PTWs can reduce travel times and typically have lower running costs and carbon emissions.

"There's probably never been a stronger reason to switch to two wheels," he concluded.

During National Motorcycle Week last month, people were encouraged to travel by PTWs on Ride to Work Day.

Organisers the MCI said commuting to work on two wheels is convenient and flexible, while it also cuts congestion, pollution, journey times and fuel costs.
