A number of modified car insurance holders may be among those Norfolk drivers police are warning to lock away their racing vehicles or face the consequences.
Officers in the Great Yarmouth area have suggested that banger racers could see their vehicles taken away and crushed unless the drivers stow them away safely in a garage or on private land.
The call has come following sightings of the automobiles leaking oil and brake fluid.
In addition, local children have apparently taken to clambering onto the models, which could see the owners risk more than a modified car insurance claim.
Many of the vehicles get damaged as they race towards the chequered flag and may be too unsafe to be kept on the road.
Dave Smith, the manager of race organising firm Speedworth, said that police intervention was probably a last resort and that previous attempts to rectify the situation may have fallen on deaf ears.
"I would imagine that 90 per cent of banger car owners would use a garage, but there is always someone who will leave it outside their house which is not a good idea," he added.
