Speedy drivers in Devon may have to turn to specialised modified car insurance under new proposals being drawn up by local police forces.
A new scheme aiming to address the problem of anti-social driving will see police in the region contacting offenders' insurers in order to advise them that the motorists are driving modified vehicles, the Mid Devon Star has reported.
Other policing moves will focus on an increased presence on the roads, with plain clothes policemen equipped with video cameras among the schemes set to be launched to combat dangerous driving.
The changes will be in place until the end of the year, with other counteractive measures including the narrowing of roads in selected areas.
"There is a recognised problem [
] the motorists are putting themselves and other people in danger, with a flagrant disregard for the law. They treat the roads as if they own them," inspector Richard Pryce of Devon and Cornwall Police told the newspaper.
Last year an Australian firm announced that it was trialling a CCTV camera that could record sound as well as video footage, advising that the system could be used to penalise motorists with modified exhausts.
