UK motorists spend an average of £1,776,62 a year in keeping their car on the road through costs such as insurance, tax, maintenance and petrol, it has been revealed.
The study by Zurich Insurance noted that this figure amounts to a collective £51 billion being spent every year through such costs. The amount is likely to be still higher for likes of modified car insurance holders who spend extra on new exhausts and other alterations.
But high road costs meant that many motorists were avoiding key payments, with 70 per cent admitting to delaying repair work, a third putting off vehicle tax or MOT payments and three per cent neglecting to purchase insurance altogether.
"The most worrying findings from our research are those that show some drivers are risking their own and others’ safety in a bid to save money. We need to change those attitudes and remember that it is a legal requirement to have both a valid MOT and insurance," advised Zurich Insurance's chief marketing officer Mark Searles.
Earlier this month it was revealed that the price of the average car insurance quote fell fractionally to £802 per vehicle.
