Oaktec Honda Insight named most economical hybrid

A unique Oaktec Honda Insight hybrid rally car has been named the most economical hybrid vehicle in the RAC Future Car Challenge, despite being considered too fast to compete in a recent championship.

The eco-friendly car went up against international green manufacturers, specialist companies and celebrity drivers to take the accolade, which measures the amount of energy used to complete a timed course between Brighton and London.

Developed by a Lancashire-based innovation company, the unique, modified Oaktec Honda recorded an impressive 93.8 mpg on its way to a clear-cut triumph.

Its team of development engineers Paul Andrews and Jeremy Dale were presented with the coveted trophy at a gala dinner in front of an audience of high-profile figures and competitors.

Paul Clarke, Green-Car-Guide.com's founder and editor, said: "I'm delighted that a car that wins rallies can also win an economy competition. It shows that efficiency can mean speed as well as high miles per gallon."

This comes after Nissan was awarded Green-Car-Guide's greenest manufacturer of the year award for its dedication and leadership demonstrated by the launch of the all-electric Nissan Leaf.Copyright Performance Direct News
