A new survey has discovered that while keeping a car clean is a priority for numerous drivers, maintenance is not.
Mytyres.co.uk conducted a poll and found that 80 per cent of people, including modified car insurance customers, polish their vehicle on a regular basis.
However, only 30 per cent have checked the condition of their spare tyre in the past three months.
The company said this part of a car's upkeep seems to be the most neglected by owners.
A spokesperson said checking tyres only takes a couple of minutes and can save a lot of wasted effort in the long run.
"While it is not illegal to have a spare below the legal 1.6 mm tread depth, it does become illegal the moment it is fitted to the car," he added.
Driving with under-pressurised tyres can also cause a motor to consume more fuel, as it requires more power to travel. In turn, this causes more carbon to be emitted, increasing the eco footprint of the driver.
