FIA World Rally Championship will come to a head in Wales

Fans of motorsport are likely to be flocking to the upcoming Wales Rally GB this month, which will see two of the industry's biggest names go head-to-head for the coveted title of the FIA World Rally Champion (WRC).

Kicking off on November 10th, the spectacular will see France's Sebastien Loeb and Finland's Mikko Hirvonen compete for the crown on a considerably revised route compared to previous years, which could be of interest to modified car insurance policyholders.

Loeb is classed as the most successful rally driver in history, with seven consecutive world titles in the past ten years. But closest rival Hirvonen, who competes for UK-based factory Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team, may be about to end the current champions reign at the top.

The Frenchman said: "We will have to fight hard in GB. We know it can be very difficult so we will see what happens. It will be interesting."

A ceremonial start will take place on the first day of the competition in Llandudno, which will mark the launch of the proceedings with drivers heading down the winding cliff-face road around the Great Orme headland on the country's northern coastline.

The route, which has not been utilised at the event for more than 30 years, will then see competitors turn to the Clocaenog forest before venturing southwards with the high speed action on many of Wales' most renowned roads.

Simon Long, chief executive of World Rally Championship promoter North One Sport, said: "It's going to be a thrilling and nail-biting end to what's been a very dramatic first season for the dynamic new-look WRC with the latest technical regulations and live TV power stages."

After being signed by the Citroen factory tream, Loeb took his debut WRC in 2002 at the Rallye Deutschland, with his first drivers' title coming in 2004.

The tarmac expert has triumphed in all but two of his WRC races on the surface since 2005.Copyright Performance Direct News
