Motorists are at risk of invalidating their modified car insurance if they lie to try and get a better deal, it has been claimed.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued this warning after it found providers were reporting an increasing number of fraud cases.
According to the group, one common deception in the UK involves a parent adding a child to a motor insurance policy as an occasional user of a car, when in fact the son or daughter is the main driver of that vehicle.
The organisation also said a growing number of customers were neglecting to provide information on previous driving offences.
Commenting on the apparent rise in fraudulent applications, Nick Starling from ABI stated: "Honesty is the only policy."
He added: "Cheating to get cheaper insurance puts your cover in jeopardy, with potentially disastrous consequences."
