A group has been established which may help drivers keep their imported car insurance intact after a gang was sentenced last week for importing cars and re-registering them with false identities.
The organisation, made up of members of the Metropolitan (Met) Police, Auto Trader, eBay Motors, Motors.co.uk, the Finance & Leasing Association and Exchange & Mart, could help motorists ensure they do not invalidate their imported car insurance by trading with fraudsters.
Entitled VSTAG, the group has produced a consumer guide to help protect both buyers and sellers of automobiles to avoid fraud in their advertising.
Members are now sharing information between themselves in a bid to identify which advertisements may be fraudulent, as well as establishing best practice.
Detective Chief Superintendent Nigel Mawer, of the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Command, said: "Through this initiative we aim to make the transaction safer. When buying a car, if you have any doubts at all, walk away."
