Speeding insurance 'may not be affected by penalty points'

Convicted driver insurance news: A rise in the number of drivers being issued with penalty points means motorists may soon no longer be forced to pay higher rates for their speeding insurance, it has been suggested.

This week one insurer announced that drivers with up to nine points will receive only small rises in costs, with others likely to follow suit.

Penalty points no longer necessarily indicate that a driver is reckless or likely to get into an accident, a spokesman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) advised, according to the Daily Mail.

"There has been a shift. The boom in speed cameras means many more motorists, who consider themselves to be safe drivers, are picking up speeding convictions," commented the ABI's Malcolm Tarling.

Commenting on the story, Performance Direct’s Matthew Collett said:

"This is old news. At Performance Direct we've been taking a sensible and pragmatic view to speeding fines for some years. Drivers with speeding fines have always been able to save money with Performance Direct. We look beyond occasional speeding fines to the driver's long term safety record"

Recent changes to the penalty point system mean that drivers caught talking on their mobile phones face a fine of £60 and three points on their licence.
