Speed camera shift angers ?Safe Speed?

Convicted driver insurance news: Campaigners have denounced government plans to shift responsibility for speed cameras to local councils, saying the Department for Transport is trying to "shift the blame".

An increasing number of drivers have been forced to look for specialist speeding insurance in recent times as speed cameras continue to catch out more motorists.

New plans have seen responsibility for speed camera funding and other decisions be delegated to local councils, effective from the beginning of this month.

The ‘Safe Speed’ group was critical of the decision and said it was tantamount to an admittance of failure.

"[The] Department for Transport is shifting responsibility for their hated speed cameras towards local authorities. They want someone else to take the heat," said ‘Safe Speed’ founder Paul Smith.

"But the worst bit is that Department for Transport now knows that speed cameras haven't made the road safer. They should be owning up, not trying to shift the blame for a failed road safety policy," he added.

The new measures also mean that fines raised from speeding will no longer be able to fund new speed cameras.

Commenting on the story Damian Collett, Managing Director of Performance Direct, said: "We've done a great deal of work with road safety groups like RoadPeace and we are well aware of the good points regarding safety cameras. Groups like 'Safe Speed' are fundamentally anti camera so it’s unlikely that they’d support anything to do with them.

"Whatever your views, Performance Direct can save you money on convicted driver insurance if you've got points from a speed camera conviction. We know many good drivers now have points and we don't penalise them!"
