Motorists should make a number of checks before beginning a journey to avoid becoming involved in an accident or breaking down during the colder months.
This is according to the Retail Motor Industry Federation, which has provided car owners with a number of tips to make driving less hazardous in the winter.
These include monitoring traffic reports before setting off on a journey to make sure that there are no incidents along your planned route, as well as ensuring you have enough fuel for the trip and checking antifreeze levels prior to leaving.
When on the road, the industry body observed, drivers should constantly monitor their speed and keep a good distance from the car in front, as bad weather can increase stopping distances - advice that maybe useful to convicted drivers.
The Motor Cycle Industry Association has issued similar tips to motorbike riders, urging them to reduce their speed during fog and rain and to check their mirrors regularly.
