Sussex Police warn against drink-driving over festive period

Car owners in Sussex have been warned that they could face convictions or injury if they get behind the wheel while drunk during the festive period.

Sussex Police have reminded drivers that while enjoying oneself during the Christmas and new year period is encouraged, this should not come at the expense of safety on the roads.

Since November 14th 2011, the constabulary has been carrying out a breath testing initiative that has resulted in 154 arrests, with many perpetrators ending up with driving bans or prison terms.

Chief Inspector Di Roskilly of Sussex Police's road policing unit noted that drink driving increases the risk of collisions, endangers other road users and creates significant costs for UK society as a whole.

Therefore, she said it is vital that people make sure to "have a designated driver in your group who stays sober or you get a taxi or public transport home".

People convicted of drink driving may find themselves banned from the road for at least a year and fined up to £5,000, with prison sentences lasting for up to six months.
