Drivers urged to wake up to dangers of ineffective air con units

Motorists who do not want to find themselves searching for convicted driver insurance may be well advised to take on board advice from Kwik-Fit.

The group has urged car owners to get their air conditioning unit recharged.

It explained having a nice cool cabin could help keep people awake behind the wheel.

This may prove to be useful advice as motorists who drop off on the road are putting themselves and others in serious danger - and if they cause an accident could be charged with dangerous driving.

Kwik-Fit issued this advice after conducting research that found 13 per cent of Brits have fallen asleep while in control of a vehicle.

Of those drivers, 15 per cent said stifling temperatures were to blame for making them feel sleepy.

According to Kwik-Fit, this is hardly surprising as 89 per cent of motorists never recharge their ventilation system.

Customer services director David White said: "Our research shows that a fully functioning air conditioning unit might help to prevent you feeling drowsy in the first place."

Previously, the company warned that people who do not get such systems cleaned regularly may find their car starts to smell.
