Convicted driver insurance may be needed by man after traffic offence

A man from Harrington has been given a £60 fine for committing a traffic offence.

Maxwell Cannon, 25, was spotted stopped on a pedestrian crossing's zigzag markings by police, where they issued him with a fixed penalty despite his protests that he was waiting until congestion calmed down to reverse on to his driveway.

According to the Whitehaven News, Cannon, of Ellerbank Road, refused to accept the notice and in February appeared at West Allerdale Magistrates' Court.

He was fined and later failed an appeal at Carlisle Crown Court.

Convicted driver insurance may now be on the cards for the motorist, who said the force may have only caught him in order to boost statistics.

"If the police were so worried about my causing an obstruction why didn't they just stop the traffic for a moment so I could safely reverse into my driveway?" he added.

However, Ahmed Nadim - judging the case - said he should not be exempted from regulations.

Consumers are likely to find that insurers charge higher premiums for drivers with penalty points on their licence.
