Motorists who receive a conviction for drink-driving could subsequently struggle to find insurance, it has been claimed.
According to the Association of British Insurers, some providers are unwilling to offer cover at any price for people caught behind the wheel while over the limit.
The group added at the very least such offenders would see the cost of their premiums rise significantly.
A spokesman for the organisation said there were good reasons for this, as people who consume alcohol before getting behind the wheel put themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk.
"You would have to be living in a nuclear bunker for the last 20 years not to realise drink-driving is a very dangerous, reckless and irresponsible thing to do," he added.
However, motorists who have learnt the cost of hitting the road while under the influence of alcohol the hard way may find there are still affordable policies available and might benefit from searching for specialist convicted driver insurance.
