Ashley Cole might soon need insurance for convicted drivers

Footballer Ashley Cole may be facing a ban from the roads after being convicted of travelling at 104 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Those with insurance for convicted drivers know that the penalties for such offences are often severe.

Cole, who plays for Chelsea and England and is married to TV favourite Cheryl Cole, was behind the wheel of his Lamborghini on November 17th 2008 when he was stopped by police who used a laser device to check his speed.

He did not appear at the hearing but the court was told how the footballer told authorities he was being followed by paparazzi on the A3 during the incident.

But prosecutor Richard Lomax argued: "It cannot be a defence to the offence of speeding that one is trying to get away in the circumstances of members of the press showing excessive attention."

Cole previously played defence for Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
