In news that might interest holders of car insurance for high performance cars, a warning has been issued by one firm on the rumoured inclusion of the hard shoulder as an additional lane on the nation's motorways.
The scheme has recently been subject to a pilot scheme on the M42, allowing the hard shoulder to be used as another lane during peak times, RoadTransport.com reports.
This week, an announcement is expected to be made by the Department for Transport on the possibility of the idea being rolled out across the UK.
While recognising the success of the M42 pilot, Tony Chilcott of Direct Line said it is important that the hard shoulder is only used for such purposes in peak times and does not become a default extra lane.
"The incorrect use of hard shoulder running lanes by motorists who are unsure of the rules or who are rushing to get from A to B could have severe implications for road safety," he said. Suggesting there could be implications for holders of high performance car insurance and other policies.
