Brits start 'opting for green cars'

Motorists who are concerned about the environment, including those with classic car insurance, may be interested to hear that the first six months of 2008 have witnessed the biggest fall in new car CO2 on record.

Figures from Clean Green Cars and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed so far this year new car CO2 has fallen by 6.4 per cent, with a 3.6 per cent drop in the past three months.

However, Jay Nayley of Clean Green Cars does not put the change down to people's desire to save the planet.

He said: "The great irony is that rising fuel costs, not environmental concerns, have done more to accelerate the shift to fuel efficient cars than any other initiative."

Paul Everitt from SMMT said his organisation would continue to work with the government, fuel companies and other relevant bodies to ensure further progress on this issue.

SMMT claims its mission is to promote the interests of the motor industry both in the UK and abroad.
