The Silverstone Classic has achieved a motorsport first, it has been claimed.
Organisers have revealed they intend to offset the whole of this year's carbon output.
This is equivalent to some 1,200 tonnes, as it takes into account the spectators' emissions, in addition to those released by the racing antique autos.
Sponsor of the event Carbon-Cutter will foot the cost of the measures.
Commenting on the plans, managing director George Rozwadowski said: "We are not aware of any motorsport event to date off-setting its entire carbon footprint and we're delighted to support the Silverstone Classic in crossing the carbon neutral winning line."
The figure of 1,200 tonnes has been checked and verified by the government's Energy Saving Trust.
Ken Pritchard Jones, director of racing at Silverstone, expressed excitement at being involved in the project.
Meanwhile, motorists who collect vintage vehicles may find they can secure a great deal on classic car insurance online.
