Audi was founded in 1910 in Saxony and immediately began producing automobiles, the type C becoming one of the most successful commercial vehicles of the early 20th century. In 1932 Audi merged with three other German car manufacturers to form the Auto Union and it is this Union brand logo, with four interlocking rings, that is now famous as Audi's logo.
Audi, as a name itself threatened to be lost forever after WW2 as the Auto Union was forced to relocate into West Germany and produced cars under the Auto Union brand itself. Following a takeover by Daimler-Benz in the late 1950s type of cars that Auto Union produced were not popular with the new management and the same thing occurred then the company was taken over by Volkswagen in the mid-1960s. However, the Auto Union team did not want to let its legacy to disappear and, in secret, designed and produced the Audi 100 which was presented in 1968. It impressed the Volkswagen hierarchy sufficiently enough to be produced using the Audi name which has now grown from strength to strength ever since.
The Audi 100 is one of the most popular Audis for collectors as it is the car that re-launched Audi as a prestige car brand.
Following on from the huge success of the Audi 100, in 1974, Audi released the Audi 50 which was a smaller production car, this became the forerunner for the VW Polo.
It is in the sports, luxury and performance car categories where Audi truly excels. This is seen notably in the form of the 1980 Audi Quattro which is seen to have been a defining car of the era. This challenged traditional supercar manufacturers in terms of both design and performance and it was the car that put all wheel drive vehicles on the map. Audi was beginning to create a name for itself not only as a producer of quality and luxury vehicles but in also being able to advance technology in the automobile industry. This is where the famous 'Vorspung durch technik' slogan originates.
Into the 1990’s Audi continued to grow as a luxury car producer with the V8 sedan becoming Audi's flagship vehicle.
In 1998 with the launch of the Audi TT Audi once again showed its quality and consistency in producing classic cars. Again, Audi was responsible for challenging the existing conventions about how cars should be made, in this case, the coupe.
The Audi R8 too, which was released in the 2006 is Audi's version of a sports car and combines all the luxury, performance and design as you would expect from Audi.
Today Audi produces cars across a variety of different vehicle ranges including sedans, SUVs, compact cars and sports cars but no matter what type of car is, quality is the defining factor of an Audi car.
