About Employers Liability Insurance and Indemnity Insurance
The law requires most employers to insure against liability for any injury or disease to their staff arising from their
employment.
This is because employers are responsible for the health and safety of their employees while they are doing their jobs.
This responsibility covers both current employees, who may be injured doing a job at work, and your ex staff members,
who may become ill as a result of their work when they were in your employment.
To cover both these eventualities, The Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 dictates that the employer
must have at least a minimum level of insurance cover in place to address such claims.
Employers' liability insurance will allow you to meet the cost of compensation for your employees
and ex employees' injuries or illness, whether they were caused at your place of work or not.
Public liability insurance is different. It covers you for claims made against you by members of the public or other
businesses, but not for claims by employees. And in this case the insurance (covering you for claims made against your
business by members of the public), is generally voluntary.
Employers' liability insurance, however, is compulsory in the UK and you can be fined if you don't
have, and display, a current policy.
