One third of all businesses do not report e-crime despite the effect it may have on their working practices and the danger it poses to business insurance, new research shows.
A study by Infosecurity Europe found that varying levels of e-crime threaten businesses every day, but that firms found it hard to understand when exactly such incidents posed a major threat.
Part of the reason for the unwillingness to report online threats could be the lack of response from police forces. A lack of understanding over what constitutes an e-crime and financial values below which criminal activity is not examined are two such issues that the industry has highlighted in recent weeks.
"[E-crimes] can only be measured if we report incidents when they occur," said Tony Neate of internet security group GetSafeOnline, speaking to Management Consultancy.
"Without collating the scale of the e-crime problem, we will never truly be aware of the cost to society at large and the measures that need to be put in place to fight it," he added.
