Businesses and homeowners need to ensure their buildings and contents insurance covers them for floods, Zurich has claimed.
Research by the group revealed almost half of those questioned did not know what protection their monthly premiums provided.
Some 65 per cent were unprepared for a flood even though 62 per cent felt climate change meant they were at greater risk from such an occurrence.
Another 40 per cent did not know where they could go for information and advice about the possibility of a natural disaster happening in their area.
Commenting on the research, property claims director Anna Fleming said: "The increasingly unpredictable nature of the weather ... means that there is an urgent need for all homes and businesses to prepare for this risk."
