Businesses urged to address on-road mobile phone use

Firms may be able to protect their cheap business motor insurance by putting rules in place to govern how their employees communicate while on the road, it has been suggested.

The Fuelcard Company claimed organisations need to make sure staff are not using handheld mobile phones behind the wheel.

It issued this advice after conducting research that found motorists are four times more likely to be involved in a crash if they try chatting or texting on such a device while in control of a vehicle.

The group pointed out it would not just be individual drivers who would find themselves in trouble in the event of a collision.

Jakes de Kock, marketing manager, stated: "If there is an accident and the correct procedures haven’t been followed, courts will hold fleet managers and company owners accountable and this could result in legal action against them."

Meanwhile, firms keen to cut costs may find they can reduce the amount they are paying for all sorts of insurance by searching online for the most competitive deals available.
