Driving in Europe

Motorway Tolls
Many motorways in central Europe have pay-as-you-go tolls. Toll charges vary, as do payment procedures. The following examples are for typical journeys in France. The payment procedure here involves either taking a ticket on entering and paying for the distance travelled on exit or paying a set amount on leaving the motorway. Payment can be made with a credit card or cash. Automatic booths require cash, so it's always useful to have plenty of change ready.

Calais to Paris £10
Calais to Marseilles £27
Paris to Lyons £15
Paris to Nice £33.50
Paris to Bordeaux £24.50
    (as of 6/12/2000)

Austria - Toll stickers can be purchased at the border. These autobahnvignettes should be attached to the windscreen. Tourists can purchase a 10-day sticker for ATS 70, or a 2-month sticker for ATS 150.

Italy - Toll payment is by cash or 'Viacards' which are obtainable from tollbooths. Viacards must be paid for with cash and can be used in both manual and automatic booths.

Spain - Payment at toll stations can be made with credit cards, although cash may be preferred in some cases.
