In the event of a breakdown...

Many motorists have experienced the inconvenience of having a vehicle break down. Being stranded on a motorway at night can be a frightening experience, especially if you don't have a rescue policy.

While you cannot avoid breaking down you can take steps to lessen the chances of it happening and be aware of what to do.

• Regular service checks at a garage may ensure that potential problems are highlighted in advance.
• Carry out a check of tyre pressure, oil and fuel yourself before setting off on a journey.
• At the first sign of vehicle breakdown put on your hazard lights and try to stop in a safe place.

Motorway Breakdowns

• If you need to pull over on the hard shoulder, park as close to the verge as possible.
• Exit from the passenger side and if you need to walk to an emergency phone please lock all the doors.
• It is dangerous to sit in your vehicle while parked on the hard shoulder, ensure that you have a spare coat or blanket in your vehicle to keep you warm.
• Emergency phones are situated a mile apart on the hard shoulder. Small posts with arrows indicate the direction of the nearest phone.
• Calls from emergency phones are free. The operator will be able to transfer you to your rescue company. Please tell the operator if you are travelling alone.
• If another vehicle approaches you to offer assistance tell them to call the emergency services. No one other than the registered rescue company is legally allowed to offer assistance.
• If you are travelling alone and another vehicle approaches, be cautious. It is recommended that you get into your car immediately and lock the passenger door.
